"Bridgestone R10 Review
by Nathan Gilmore II on 02/16/12
Racers and Track Day goers around the world were excited with the release of Bridgestone's new DOT race tire: The Battlax R10. Many experienced riders were able to get a chance to test these tires shortly after they were released. All of the reviews were positive. I too could not wait to finally get my hands on a set.
I've ridden on pretty much all of the major brands of tire and have an idea of what I generally like in a tire. I typically look for quicker turn-in with a more angular profile, mid-corner stability, and good drive grip since I don't like my rear moving around beneath me although some riders like a loose rear. After spending 2 and a half days on the new R10 I've finally decided to give my review.
At best I am a fast intermediate-Slow Advanced pace track day rider. I've never raced but I get around pretty good. I ran the R10 at Jennings GP located in Florida. The track is known to be one of the more abrasive tracks on the East Coast. I rode for the full 20 minute sessions and would say that I pretty much logged approximately 200 miles on the tire over the course of the long weekend. I chose a medium front (120/70) and a medium rear (190/55).
Tire wear was consistent with the suspension set up properly. Since the track was mostly left-handers I wore the rubber down way past the wear bars and there was no more tread left on the left side of the tire. However, grip remained consistent. I caught some slides coming out of a tight left hander (turn 11). After softening up the suspension grip returned. So these tires are in fact SENSITIVE to suspension adjustment. Also, I was led to believe that turn 11 was just a slick section of the track. In any case, it was easy to control the level of traction with the throttle. There were no surprises. Everything was controllable all the time. I must mention though that up until the rear tire started to go off there was not one hint of slide when it was a fresh tire. I would say that I put in about 140 miles before I got my first slide. Pretty good!
The front tire received mixed reviews from other testers. A friend of mine said he noticed chatter. My guess is that the slick he was running prior was a heavier tire and could compensate for his lack of suspension tuning. Other racers complained of a tucking nature of the tire when the front wasn't fully loaded. Again this leads me to think that they need to play around with their suspension setup. In my case, I didn't notice any such tucking of the front tire, nor did I notice any chatter. It gripped fantastic and I was able to hold my lines.
The tires warmed up extremely fast and for the first time in my years of riding on the track I was able to get knee down by the 2nd or 3rd turn on my WARM-UP lap! I was using warmers but I was still very impressed with that.
Overall I would have liked more grip from the rear but the tires in general grip fantastic! They warm up quick, and any slides encountered don't take you by surprise. They won't last as long as certain race slicks out there that are known to get up to 6-8 track days but if you want a good tire that can run lap record pace for a few races or 2 full track days then you'll be happy with the Bridgestone R10.
One final thing that I'd like to point out is that the R10s have a softer carcass and only work with higher than normal tire pressures. Some race tires run as low as 24psi hot off the track in the rear. The Bridgestone R10 rear would only work well around 34psi hot off the track in the rear. The front I maintained around 32psi. Keep that in mind if you decide to give these tires a chance.
On a scale of 1-10 I've got to give these tires a 9. I didn't give a 10 because of how sensitive they are to suspension adjustments and tire pressure. But then again, we all should be setting up our suspension anyway for changing weather conditions, different track surfaces and elevations, as well as different tire profiles etc. Additionally, we should always be checking our pressures.
